D is the highest Color grade, which has no hue, or rather the lack of Color. It will appear Colorless, when viewed under a white background. D Color diamonds are desrirable to set on all colored metals as long as it is cut to the highest light performance and symmetry. When set on rose or yellow gold, a D Super Ideal Cut diamond will contrast against the rose or yellow gold very well, and bring out its true whiteness and brightness.
On the other hand, a D Color diamond with light leakages (GIA steep/deep, shallow cuts, or anything out of the Crown/Pavilion zenith that cause light leakages), would allow the color of the sorrounding metal to seep into the diamond, making the purchase of such a high color diamond rather pointless.
D Color diamonds are more commonly set on engagement or proposal rings, as the diamond is more prominent. People wanting D Color diamonds usually wants the best of the best and place high importance for its visual ''whiteness'' and rarity. D Color diamonds are the most rare and expensive, as it commands a price premium for being the best color.

E Color diamonds is the 2nd best Color, which looks extremely close to D. They are prized for their almost perfect lack of color.
Most people find it challenging to distinguish the difference between D and E Color. E Color diamonds are still considered very rare, and are highly sought after for those wanting a Colorless diamond, without needing to pay the premium for a D color.
F Color diamonds are grouped together in the ''Colorless'' range, together with D and E. Although it is at the bottom end of the Colorless range, they are still highly sought after for its beauty and lack of color.
The F Color diamonds are a favourite for diamond buyers looking to purchase a Colorless diamond, without paying too much of a premium. Hence, F Color diamonds give good value for those seeking a Colorless stone. This however, varies from person to person as some people may be more color sensitive. The difference between a E and F may be very minimal, but once compared against a D, some might find it too noticeable of a difference.
G Color diamonds is the top color grade in the ''Near Colorless'' range. They exhibit little to no color in the diamond, and many may find it difficult to see the color hue. In fact, most people struggle to view the difference between a F and G Color.
G Color diamonds offers great value for those wanting a ''white'' diamond. It is important for the diamond hue to be yellow for G Color diamonds, and not brown, green or gray, as yellowish hue is the least obvious. Hence, a G color diamond of yellow hue, would still appear ''white'', while providing some savings without sacrificing on the beauty of the diamond.
When deciding on a diamond's color grade, there are several factors to consider. Daily or occasional wear, wearer's skin tone, understanding your partner's desired requirements and ability to differentiate between the colors, and most of all budget. Note that it is never a good choice to sacrifice Cut for Color. A G Color Super Ideal Cut diamond may appear brighter, whiter, more firey and scintillating than a D Color diamond that is of an inferior cut quality. In the worse scenario, diamond buyers who are unaware of Cut quality, may try to maximize their diamond's Carat size by sacrificing both Cut and Color. When doing so, not only is the true body color of the diamond revealed, but it is further darkened by light leakages or over-contrasted areas, which makes it a double whammy.
